The Apostolic Palace
Since 2016, by decision of Pope Francis, the Apostolic Palace is no longer a papal summer residence and has been transformed into a museum.
The Pontifical Villas
In the territory of Castel Gandolfo we also find the well-known Pontifical Villas, owned by the Holy See. A complex of structures consisting of three parts: the first is constituted by the Pontifical Gardens, the original heart of the Villa Pontificia, Villa Cybo and the third block consists of Villa Barberini built by Matteo Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII. The latter was included in the Pontifical Villas only in 1929.
Lake Albano
Lake Albano is one of the most known and popular places in the province of Rome. The lake is almost elliptical in shape and its coasts, having been populated since the Bronze Age, are rich in interesting archaeological remains both prehistoric and, above all, Roman. Moreover, there are also many sports activities that can be practiced around Lake Albano and its waters. Canoeing and pedal boats are among the most practiced activities while the banks are easily accessible by jogging, mountain biking or a relaxing walk under the bush. So a real treasure to be respected and lived in various ways, all just a few kilometers from the chaotic Roman metropolis.
National Museum of the roman ships
The Museum of Roman Ships was opened between 1933 and 1939 to exhibit two imperial ships that belonged to Emperor Caligula (37-41 AD) and were found in the waters of Lake Nemi between 1929 and 1931. Destroyed by a fire in 1944, the museum was finally opened to the public in the late Eighties. Nowadays, the museum exhibits materials and documental evidence about the hulls and the story of how they have been brought to light.
